Internship Job Description

American Biotechnology Association, Inc. (ABA) is a Washington, DC-based non-profit start-up dedicated to preparing students to become the innovators of the future. ABA is focused on creating STEM-focused educational programming through partnerships with local for-profit, non-profit, private, and public entities, and industry professionals committed to informing key focus areas for the production of educational tools for STEM education. Interns will gain exposure to real-life educational settings in the nation’s capital by observing and engaging educational environments and participating in the development of educational tools for the advancement of STEM education. Interns will participate in productive activities including, but not limited to: mentoring high school learners in Washington, DC, and supervising the development and production of educational tools under the guidance of licensed educators and STEM-focused industry experts.

This internship will extend from March 2023 to August 2023, with the opportunity to extend based on intern performance and interest.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of organization’s objectives, key activities and requirements in order to anticipate and proactively address the needs of the team.

  • Develop and strengthen ABA’s relationships with high school interns to better address their needs and understand their experience with ABA’s summer Biotech Bootcamp and Biotech Summer Intensive (BSI) programs.

  • Serve as the point of contact for ABA and partner schools, liaise and build relationships with key school staff including teachers, administrators, and guidance counselors.

  • Collaborate with ABA Partnership Liaison to develop grant proposals for ABA programming funding from the Department of Employment Services (DOES) and other institutions.

  • Assist in recruiting high school summer interns for ABA’s Bootcamp and BSI programs, including scheduling student interviews. 

  • Serve as a knowledge resource for ABA’s summer programs. Collaboratively share this knowledge and work with others to improve processes and procedures.

  • Manage information electronically and communicate that information routinely to ABA’s board members.

  • Perform administrative duties such as managing calendars, reviewing information and reports, and coordinating the distribution of these and other materials.

  • Additional duties as assigned to meet organization’s needs.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with ABA’s administration, staff, board members, and high school level student interns.

  • The ability to manage multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment while working with ABA’s board members and partners.

  • Demonstrate a "can do" attitude and a willingness to continue learning and developing the skills of an independent thinker.

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products.

  • Experience with digital marketing and social media preferred. Working knowledge of Canva is a plus.

Education And Experience

  • Upper-level undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in communications, marketing, or a comparable degree, with a passion for client services and relationship development.

  • Experience working in an administrative support role is preferred.
